Apple: Feature Requests for AppleTV and/or FrontRow

I’m not sure if anyone from Apple is reading this post, but hope springs eternal.

Listen, I love my AppleTV.  Every week I convert more and more of my movies to MP4 and add them to iTunes.  And I love the fact that FrontRow 2.0 in Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) is basically the AppleTV software.  Beautiful.  My Mac Mini, with a 500GB USB 2.0 drive, is an AppleTV on steroids.  Perfect.

I now have over 200 hours of movies and TV ripped for my two Apple boxes.

But there is a problem.  Two, really.  I need to request two key feature additions for the next dot-release of AppleTV and FrontRow:

Request 1: Please add video playlists

This should be obvious, because you already have them on the iPod, but I really need these on the AppleTV.  I have a lot of ripped TV shows and cartoons that are only 5-20 minutes in length.  What I want to do is arbitrarily create a video playlist, and have the AppleTV play continuously some number of shows in a row.  Right now, the device has no playlists.  So either I have to rip a customer MP4 of different combinations, or I have to actually manually play each show individually.

Example: School House Rock

I ripped this DVD.  37 Episodes, each 3 minutes.  Of course, I could not possibly rip the individual shows given the current AppleTV interface.  Instead, I ripped a full two-hour block of all 37 episodes back-to-back.  I then ripped smaller, 8 or 9 episode sequences based on topic.

What I should have been able to do is:

  1. Rip each 3 minute short as a separate file
  2. Create playlists of different groups and sequences of those segments

A lot of great video content is short, and makes sense to view in playlists.  Ripping different combinations into a single video file is wasteful, and clutters the interface.

Request 2: Folders

This one is easy because Tivo already figured this out with version 4.0 of their interface (they are now on 9.x I think).

Let me create folders to group together content so that I don’t have a linear list that goes on forever.  For example, if I have all 6 Star Wars movies, let me create a folder for them.  If I have 10 hours of Band of Brothers, let me group it together.

Right now, the only “grouping” functionality is through the TV Shows interface.  Frankly, that’s pretty clunky.  I’m not even sure I like breaking apart video into movies and TV shows.  I certainly don’t have that breakdown on my Tivo, and I’m not sure I like it.  I’d rather just see TV Shows as a folder of video, sorted by season, then episode, kind of like music that is broken down by artist, and then album.

True, I wouldn’t mind dynamic grouping based on tagged elements of the movies, but that’s actually overkill for now.  I’d settle for good, old-fashioned, manual folders.  A simple directory structure could help me scale the current interface with the remote to handling hundreds of movies, instead of dozens.

So, if you are listening Apple, help me out here.  Thanks.

The Worst Appetizer: The Chili’s Awesome Blossom

My wife forwarded a really fun article:

Divine Caroline: The Worst Artery Cloggers in America

It’s a sick type of voyerism, I know.  Dietary rubbernecking.  You look at the nutritional stats and you go, “How could anyone eat one of these things?!?”

Well, in all fairness, I do believe that in younger days I did actually eat one of these: The Chili’s Awesome Blossom.  Check it out:

Worst Appetizer: Chili’s Awesome Blossom
2,710 calories, 203 grams fat

Chili’s is all sorts of wrong. The one and only time I ate there, I almost dove over the table and made the waitress give me my money back, it was so bad. It’s clear now I was just in a salt and sugar-induced rage. Even with their crappy food laden with sodium, fat, and emulsifiers, you’ve got to admire them. How they turned a simple onion into a day’s worth of calories and three days worth of fat is a miracle of food science.

Come on, that’s fairly amazing.  It’s not easy to hide 2710 calories in an appetizer.  Really, it isn’t.  Sure, you could serve someone a bowl of 203g of lard, but would they really eat it (that’s 40.6 teaspoons of Crisco, for those of you counting out there.)  I think it’s a fairly impressive achievement.  Given that it has been on the menu for over 10 years, it must be fairly successful.

I was somewhat suprised to see a Chipotle item on the menu.  Yes, I know anything called a Super Burrito is unlikely to appear on the Weight Watchers guide to Tex-Mex, but this was a little scathing:

Worst Meal in Tin Foil: Chipotle Barbacoa Super Burrito
1493 calories, 68 grams fat (22.5 saturated), 3,644mg sodium, 151 grams carbohydrates, 144 mg cholesterol

The other day my coworkers and I went to Chipotle. It was all shits and giggles while we were eating—“hey, pass the guac!” “want some more chips?!”—but then about an hour later, things went terribly wrong. Our stomachs hurt. Our mouths puckered. I drank about a gallon of water but couldn’t seem to quench my thirst. The bathroom stunk.

I think it’s ironic that Chipotle sponsors a biking team. No athlete would ever eat there.

You should check out the full article.  Lots of fun.

Blu-Ray vs. AppleTV HD vs. Comcast HD vs. DVD

This is the absolutely best user-based review of the various high definition digital movie formats out there.

Apple TV 2.0 vs. Blu-Ray, DVD & HD Cable: The Comparison

Very fair, very balanced.

More importantly, this is the first review I’ve seen that doesn’t focus on the technical specifications and argue theoretically about which format should be better.   Instead, this article provides actual example frames and examples from a viewer perspective in a very realistic setting.

Gorgeous screen captures and zoomed/cropped images highlight the text along the way.

Definitely a must-read.  But, in case you find it too long, here is my take-aways:

  • Blu-Ray wins, but only matters if you actually have a 1080P set.
  • AppleTV HD is surprisingly good, despite being 720p.
  • Comcast HD seems to be the loser here, although color is better.
  • All 3 are noticeably better than upconverted DVD (once again, on a 1080P set)

The article ends up arguing that Netflix may have the best model here… but I’m not 100% sure.  I’m currently in a movie buying freeze right now as I debate what form my HD library will eventually take.  It’s hard for me to consider a format that I can’t use freely on multiple devices (Blu-Ray), but it’s also hard for me to consider a rental option where I don’t have the movie at my disposal.  A Blu-Ray disc that comes with a DRM-protected iTunes MP4 would work for me, since I’d happy pay the $20 per disc to have a physical copy and the freedom to have a file that I can use on any device.

Too bad no one is providing that… yet.

Spore: September 7th, 2008

Maxis has announced the launch date of the latest Will Wright masterpiece, Spore.

September 7, 2008.  They even have a quicktime movie just to announce it.

My previous blog post on Spore & Will Wright is here.  I got to play with the creature builder for a few seconds at Macworld 2008 in San Francisco.  It’s hard for me to comprehend how all-encompassing this game is going to be, or how long it may take to play through, let alone master.  It seems an awful lot like SimLife + SimCity + Civilization + Spaceward Ho! to me.

Mark your calendars.  I think it’s fair to say that US GDP may be impacted in Q3/Q4 2008 due to this launch.  Combined with Starcraft 2, we may indeed have a recession this year just from lost productivity.

SuperBowl XLII Winners: NY Giants & E*Trade

Due to a very strange universe that I live in, I was actually able to watch the last few minutes of the SuperBowl tonight, without knowing ahead of time who won.  It was really, really cool.  That last drive was amazing.

Probably the most amazing thing about it, however, was that it was cool enough to eclipse the second coolest thing about the game, which was this E*Trade commercial.  I’m still looking for an HD version torrent so I can keep this one on speed-dial on my TV.

Here it is on Youtube:  The 2008 E*Trade Stock Trading Baby

Enjoy.

Yes, You Can Get 1080P out of a Mac Mini

As I posted last night, I’ve hooked my new Intel Core Duo Mac Mini to a Vizio 42″ 1080P LCD.

If you read the specs at Apple, it says the Mac Mini, with 64MB DRAM driving it’s Intel GMA 950 video, can support a 1920×1200 based resolution on a monitor.  I assumed that this meant it could drive any 1080P display, which is 1920×1080.

It turns out, there are a few hurdles that could get in the way of succeeding in getting a Mac Mini to drive a 1080P TV display.  Some of the hurdles are simple, but one was quite tricky.

Here is the solution, for all those intrepid Mac warriors out there:

  1. Getting the Max Resolution on the Vizio.  The Vizio display says on the box it only supports 1366×768 for computer display.  This turns out to be the onboard limitation for their VGA port.  If you use a DVI to HDMI cable, you can drive the full 1920×1080 through the HDMI port.  I used a 10ft DVI to HDMI gold plated cable from Fry’s.  (Price $19.99)
  2. How to Get Sound on the Vizio.  I bought a cheap 3.5mm Mini Plug to RCA Red/White 6 inch cable (Price: $2.79).  I then used a standard 12ft Red/White RCA Audio cable to plug connect the Mini to the Vizio TV.  The second HDMI port on the Vizio is paired with an auxiliary set of RCA Red/White jacks, seemingly designed for this situation where your HDMI does not actually carry audio.
  3. How to Get 1080P, not 1080i, out of the Mac Mini.  This is the tough one.  When you go to the Displays control panel on the Mac Mini (Leopard, Mac OS X 10.5), you are given lots of video choices.  However, the maximum resolution says 1920×1080 (interlaced) at 60Hz.  What gives?   I’m not sure, but it seems like a bug.  The secret is to enable the checkbox that says “Show displays in menu bar”.  If you do then, a displays icon appears in the menu bar.  Click it to get a drop down menu of all display resolutions.  Interestingly, there are now two 1920×1080 options, which are labeled identically.  Choose the other one!  You’ll now be driving full 1080P (confirmed by the Vizio).

I’ve searched the web, and this issue is tricky enough that lots of people complain about the lack of the ability to drive 1080P from the Mac Mini.  Most of the debates seem to argue that it depends on the TV.  I don’t buy it.  I think the issue is a bug in the Mac OS display detection in DVI/HDMI scenarios that is somehow hiding the 1080P option.  Either that, or the Mac Mini for some reason thinks that 1080P is too much for it for some other reason, and the drop-down menu is missing that filter to remove it from the list.

I’m not going to spend time on the why.  The point is, if you are looking for the how, you just got it.

BTW Leopard is a huge improvement for applications like this.  The improved network browsing and FrontRow application are incredibly well-timed.   It’s going much better than I expected.

Our Newest Family Member: The Mac Mini

Tonight begins our newest experiment in home computing & entertainment integration.

Yes, I’m proud to welcome a Mac Mini to our household.  This is the first full-fledged computer that we’ve purchased for primarily an entertainment purpose.  While we’ve loved our 160GB AppleTV (and believe me, when your 2-year old makes AppleTV one of their first words, that’s love), the limitations on storage and software have been, well, limiting.

So thus begins the Mac Mini experiment.  Upgraded with a 500GB external USB 2.0 drive, this computer will be plugged into our new Vizio LCD, via HDMI, for full 1080P resolution.   Apple Remote, Wireless Keyboard, Wireless Mouse.  The new FrontRow 2.0 has everything we love about AppleTV, plus we’ll now have ample storage for ripping all of our DVDs to MP4.  In addition, now that Jacob is 3, we’ll be able to start using the machine as a computer as well, using it for kiddie software and educational games.  We can even use it as a DVD player in a pinch.

I’ll have to say, the Mac OS X Leopard start-up sequence for registration is just stunning at 42″ at 1080P, with full stereo sound.  Really awe-inspiring.

We’ll see how it goes.  I don’t know why, but even after setting up literally dozens of Macs in my life, setting a new one is still such a rush.   Literally, it’s like I drank a six-pack of sugar-free Red Bull or something.

Jeff Zucker, Meet Michael Eisner

At least, I believe Michael is the last big studio exec to piss Steve off.  Don’t worry, Jeff.  At least he got a  big paycheck on the way out.

From Valleywag:

NBC CEO Jeff Zucker puckers up to Steve Jobs’s posterior

“We’ve said all along that we admire Apple, that we want to be in business with Apple,” NBC Universal CEO Jeff Zucker said in the Financial Times this morning. Of course you have, Jeff. Except for maybe that time last fall when you told an audience at Syracuse University that “Apple has destroyed the music business … If we don’t take control on the video side, they’ll do the same [there].” What does Zucker’s pirouette mean?

Let’s hope Steve Jobs doesn’t hold a grudge… 🙂

Star Wars Trivia: Darth Talon

I am slightly embarrassed to admit that over the New Years holiday, I flipped through a copy of Jedi vs. Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force.  Yes, I just admitted that.  No, I’m not sure why I did it.

In any case, I now know a few new things:

  1. There is an endless supply of almost meaningless detail about timelines, people, and battles that are sometimes self-contradictory and totally separate from the movies.
  2. There is a very cool Wikia site called “Wookiepedia” that has an almost endless supply of Star Wars information, and it’s free.
  3. There is a new comic book series called “Star Wars Legacy” that takes place 137 years after the Death Star was blown up, in a bleak future where the Republic & Jedi have fallen to a new order of the Sith.

As an interesting trivia item based on (3), I also discovered what I imagine it would look like if Darth Maul and Angelina Jolie had a baby: her name is Darth Talon.  Enjoy.

SimCity Is Now Open Source as Micropolis

Very cool to see that the original SimCity code has been updated and released under the name Micropolis.

There is coverage on Boing Boing:

SimCity has just been released as free software under the GPL version 3 license (though the name has been changed to Micropolis for trademark reasons; it was the original working title). This was precipitated by the inclusion of SimCity on the One Laptop Per Child XO machines, but no reason the kids should have all the fun. Can’t wait to see the SimCity hacks that emerge now:

The “MicropolisCore” project includes the latest Micropolis (SimCity) source code, cleaned up and recast into C++ classes, integrated into Python, using the wonderful SWIG interface generator tool. It also includes a Cairo based TileEngine, and a cellular automata machine CellEngine, which are independent but can be plugged together, so the tile engine can display cellular automata cells as well as SimCity tiles, or any other application’s tiles.

There is more detailed coverage about the open source release on this blog.

Back in college, I spent a good chunk of my junior year coding up a fast sprite library for the Mac called “Pixie” which had hand-tuned blitters, layering, and other goodies that seem shockingly dated now in a world of graphics cards, modern rendering pipelines, and modern gaming engines.  Back then, getting 30 frame-per-second animation for about fifty 32×32 animated sprites was considered real bragging rights for a 68K-based Mac.  I can’t tell you how excited back then I would have been to download and play with this.

Check it out, if you are so inclined.

Wow. Goodbye Spoons, Hello Hooters!

Sorry, but this was too good not to post.

Across the street from eBay’s “South Park” (the original 8 buildings that have eBay HQ in San Jose) there is a Spoons restaurant.  It’s right across Bascom avenue from Building 0, “Toys”.  Many an eBay employee has jaywalked across Bascom (very dangerous) to get to an after-hours Spoons run.

Well, thanks to Nate Etter, I found this pointer on Valleywag.  The Spoons is being replaced by Hooters.

Now the question is, will they still honor the 10% discount they gave to eBay employees with a badge?  Lunch special?  Spoon tacos were one of the cultural favorites at the eBay South campus.

Battlestar Galactica: The Fifth & Last Cylon (possible spoilers)

So, I’m confused. Is the last Cylon the fifth cylon (of the final 5) or the twelfth (since there are 12 models).

Anyway.

Great article today in SyFy Portal. (similar coverage on BuddyTV.) It’s a teardown from the recent Entertainment Weekly coverage of Season 4. They are very clever, and managed to squeeze some hints out of the 2-page spread which is designed to mimic Da Vinci’s “The Last Supper”, except with a silhouette of the last, unknown Cylon.

The trick is, of course, that anyone else featured in picture CAN’T be the final cylon.  You definitely want to click through here to the EW article & interactive picture.

So where does that leave us? From the article (now’s the time to stop reading…):

The photo spread, which can be viewed here shows 12 different characters from “Battlestar Galactica,” and an obviously empty location. That spot, says executive producer Ronald D. Moore, is being held for the final Cylon.

“We have not yet revealed the final Cylon,” Moore told the magazine. When the writers asked if that means everyone else sitting at the table is definitely not that last Cylon, Moore was probably the most direct he’s ever been on potential show spoilers.

“You ferreted that out pretty slyly,” Moore said. “I didn’t want to give that away.”

So who is a Cylon and who isn’t? The table features six already revealed Cylons: Michael Hogan’s Col. Tigh; a new Cylon model of Number Six played by Tricia Helfer named Natalie; Number Six (possibly Head Six thanks to the red dress and Moore’s description) herself; Michael Trucco’s Anders; Aaron Douglas’ Chief Tyrol; and Athena, played by Grace Park. Those who aren’t Cylons, and probably won’t be Cylons at all, include President Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell), Lee Adama (Jamie Bamber), Gaius Baltar (James Callis), Kara Thrace (Katee Sackhoff), Karl “Helo” Agathon (Tahmoh Penikett), and William Adama (Edward James Olmos).

Strangely, my original post on spoilers for the Final Five is still one of the top posts on this blog.

Things get moving again in March.  Enjoy.

Update (4/6/2008): New post online about “Caprica” and implications for the possible fifth cylon.

Update (4/22/2008): New post on Episode 3 of the 4th Season: Ties That Bind.

Update (11/26/2008): New post on Final Five Candidates for the Fifth Cylon (Possible Spoilers).

Spykee Skype/iPhone/iPod Security Robot

It’s funny how your mind drifts to things like this when your birthday is coming up.

This guy can be controlled from your computer, and can pull sentry duty in front a doorway, relaying video and photos to you of intruders, etc.  Very funny.   There is also now a Spykee Miss, and a Spykee VoX.

Hot Movies for 2008

Some light hearted content for this New Year’s week.

I continue to find it hard to get great readouts of the big movies planned for this year, but I found some of them online here. As a result, here is a reprise of my post from last year, with the movies I’m looking forward to in 2008:

  • Cloverfield. 1/18. OK, I missed this one. Monster movie. New York. 1st person account by the guy who brought us LOST. Will see it for sure.
  • Rambo. 1/25. Yeah, not sure I can buy the 60-year-old green beret, but I’m willing to give it a shot given the fact that Rocky Balboa didn’t suck.
  • Horton Hears a Who. 3/14. Are you kidding me? I’m just glad they’ve stopped trying to make dreadful live-action versions of Dr. Seuss, and are back to the serious business of remaking these great, wacky stories. I hope they do them all.
  • Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay. 2/8. My “crappy sequel” spider sense is tingling here, but given the greatness of the original, I will give this a shot.
  • Iron Man. 5/2. Likelihood of success here is low, but I’m afraid I’m still going to see comic book movies. This is definitely B or C list for me though.
  • The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. 5/16. Yes. Yes. Yes. I still wish they would do extended versions of these for actual readers of the books.
  • Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. 5/22. Wow. Maybe Indiana & Rambo should get together and hash out their Medicare Plan D options. Yes, I will see it. 😛
  • The Incredible Hulk. 6/13. I paid a heavy credibility price for arguing, pre-release, that the original “The Hulk” was going to be good. Hope springs eternal that the movie will match the special effects.
  • Wall*e. 6/27. I’ve liked every Pixar movie to date. But something worries me about this one. The fact that it’s one of the original ideas, but that it has taken this long seems like a bad omen.
  • Hellboy II. 7/11. I found the first one entertaining enough to watch, but wasn’t thrilled by it. I’m actually surprised this generated a sequel. As long as there is no Elektra 2, I’m cool with it.
  • The Dark Knight. TBD. Should be awesome. Please be awesome. This 2008 list is starting to bum me out.
  • Where The Wild Things Are. TBD. I’m surprised this is becoming a movie… one of Jacob’s favorites. Will this work?
  • Bond 22. 11/7. Looks promising, and Casino Royale was good. Let’s hope for the best.
  • Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. 11/21. This is looking like the peak moment for me, movie wise, in 2008. Penultimate movie. Lots of danger that the movie won’t adapt to a 2.5 hour movie. I wish they’d take the Lord of the Rings approach with this one also…
  • Star Trek XI. 12/25. This is pretty risky – a Star Trek reboot movie. New actors for the old characters. Bonus points for casting Sylar in a key role. You are talking to someone who stuck with Star Trek through all four seasons of Enterprise.

Hmmm… 2008 is looking a little tired already…
