Harry Potter, Book 7: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (not Hollows)

The title for the “last” Harry Potter book has been revealed, it is: “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”

As of February 1st, you can now pre-order the standard version or deluxe version for delivery on July 21st:

Rowling’s U.S. publisher, Scholastic (nasdaq: SCHL – news – people ), Inc., released a brief statement Thursday announcing the name of the world’s most anticipated children’s book, the finale to her phenomenally popular fantasy series.

No publication date or other details were offered. Rowling is still working on the book, she wrote on her Web site in an entry posted early Thursday.

“I’m now writing scenes that have been planned, in some cases, for a dozen years or even more,” she wrote. “I don’t think anyone who has not been in a similar situation can possibly know how this feels: I am alternately elated and overwrought. I both want, and don’t want, to finish this book (don’t worry, I will.)”

You’ll notice I put the word “last” in quotations. That is because, while I like the Harry Potter series very much, they are anything but original in character development and plot. As a result, I also expect J.K. Rowling to follow the well-trod path of other series writers, who claim that a given book is the “final” one of the series, only to publish some new version of the story or characters years later, after a suitable break. It might be 10 years later, but it will happen.

I’m very excited to see if Book 7 resolves itself in the same way I think it will. Book 6 definitely followed the expected path, and sets up some very well-known character models for betrayal, defeat and victory. We’ll see what happens.

Update (12/23/06): I have changed the title to “Hallows”, since that seems to be the consensus, although the search for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows turns up a lot of news clippings as well. Thoughts?

  12. I agree that their is no orignality in the potter series…That doesnt take away the joy of reading about magic etc. How I would like to goto a school where you can fly! just the thought is amazing!

  15. As an adult Harry Potter fan I am thrilled to know that book 7 is that much closer to being released. I certainly hope it is NOT the last book set in the whole Hogwart’s universe even if Ms Rowling is not the one who writes the books themselves.

  17. i think JK ROLWLING is following the well trodden path of killing her protagonist such that the character cannot be used later on in different version after she has gone..

    I guess the harry potter series has been on of the greatest experinces of her life as well as the most harrowing.. with the whole world wondering and waiting for the next twist in the plot.

    The last book was great, although it brought a certain tinge of darkness and maturity to the book ( which was till the third book in the series nothing but fun and ful of magic),

    The last book i think is a great setup for the grand finale, which results in harry and voldmort both dying and order finally set up in the world..

    thats what i think anyway…

    cant wait for the book to come out though.. been waiting for it evre since i finished book six.

  19. directusmens, I agree with the likelihood of JK Rowling killing off Harry in his heroic efforts to save the world from Voldemort. If it’s purely to prevent additional books from being written, however, it’s guaranteed to fail.

    The most obvious way to continue writing in this series, even assuming that Harry dies would be:
    – Writing a series of books about the same 7 years, but from other characters point of view (Dumbledore, Hermione, Ron, Snape, even Voldemort himself!)
    – Prequels about Harry’s father & mother in school, the original rise of Voldemort, the rise of Dumbledore, etc.
    – Follow on books about the rise of new evil, post-Harry, from Voldemort’s followers, or brand new villians and/or splits in the wizarding community.

    All of these approaches have been popular lately to add on to successful franchises. The real issue is how willing JK Rowling is to allow these type of works to take place – $1B is a big legal warchest if she really doesn’t want to see derivative works published.

    Prhaps it refers to the horcruxes? or to the souls of all the inoccent people that died by the hand of Voldemort?

    Killing Harry would be the most logical way of getting rid of the “Potter weight”, but if she does kill him she won’t be able to leave her house ever again, she’ll have children (and a few adults, me between them) yelling and throwing things at her. Killing him will most likely end up in a revolution.

    And I think she already has enough money to abandon Harry’s storyline… perhaps writing more things like the two little books and also giving away the copyrights…

  24. Thanks for your post. I found it so interesting that the final scenes of the last book have been fixed in JKR’s mind for over a dozen years. Of course, I anxiously await the final outcome. There’s some speculation that Snape is still one of the good guys–that he killed Dumbledore on Dumbledore’s orders—-that would be an interesting twist. Who knows? Though I certainly wouldn’t celebrate the killing off of Harry Potter, I’d do kinda appreciate “Thelma and Louise” endings. If Potter does die, then I’m sure it would be a sacrifice for the greater good—the main outcome is that evil will not reign supreme. I figure, at least, we’ll wind-up being surpised who is actually evil and who isn’t in the final book. I look forward to reading it!

  26. Harry’s scar bears a horcrux. Voldemort established a flux of power between Harry and himself, but he accidentally surged too much power to Harry, and perished in his attempt to destroy Harry(besides, there was ‘Love’, too). I suspect, like countless others, that in order to vanquish the Dark Lord, Harry will have to kill himself. However, there are two interesting routes the plot can go from there. Harry can either die, and be known as a martyer throughout the wizarding world, or…he could not have the spine to kill himself, and become an evil wizard himself. I actually had a dream about this. I saw Harry slay Voldemort, then try to kill himself. He could finish the curse, and Voldemort’s chilling voice invaded his thoughts…Harry slowly rose and slipped on his enemy’s black cloak. Then, he stormed into Hogwarts and burnt it to the ground. He did Avada Kadavra on Neville and his other ‘pals’, and cast Crucio on Ginny, taking pleasure in seeing her scream in agony. Pretty grim, huh? Well, that’s the way it should be.

    I hadn’t thought about it, but the idea that Harry’s scar is a horcrux could very well be the mechanism to take the ending to a pretty dark place. A classic need for the hero to martyr himself to save the world.

    I don’t think she’ll take Harry evil, although I was surprised a bit that she never used the scar to take Harry to a more dark place temporarily. In the earlier books, there was a stronger implication that part of Voldemort was captured/linked in the scar, and it seemed like an obvious play to have it somehow “affect Harry” in a sequence or two. I think I was expecting it in Book 5, but it didn’t happen.

    Treavor, Snape is definitely still one of the good guys. If he isn’t, well, it just becomes a run-of-the-mill betrayal, and it makes Dumbledore wrong to trust him. I don’t think it fits well with the character development to have Dumbledore be wrong.

  29. i thought harry may be the last horcrux at first, but harry was supposed to be the significant death used in order to create the next horcrux wasnt he? it would be a good and very heroic ending in my opinion but if you remember the prophecy ‘either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives’ if they both end up dead its a tad contradicting isnt it…?

    Sirius Blacks Brothers initials… isnt he dead though?

  30. magic boots… yes, the initials likely come from Regulus A. Black and yes, he is dead, but that doesn’t mean that he couldn’t destroy the horcrux before getting killed… maybe the cause of death is the fact that he got near to Voldemort’s secret.

  35. I don’t believe Jo will continue writing about Harry after book seven; I think she’s got loads of other stories she wants to share. But as you say, Adam, she might be tempted ten years from now, but I have a hard time believing that. Just as I have a hard time believing she’ll kill Harry, and that he’ll die because he’s a horcrux; it’s just a too obvious of an ending for it to be one that she’s been carrying around for years. But either way, whatever she does, I trust her to finish in the best way. Whichever way it is. [Mischief managed]

  40. I have to inform you, that R.A.B (Sirius’ dead brother) said that he will be dead before any1 can read this. He put the real horcrux at 12 Grimald Place (it says in the 5th book when they were cleaning up:”A heavy lockbox nobody could open.” Thats the Ravenclaw Horcux! Wake up guys. I think Snape is realy good, maybe he was actually a spy for Dumbledore, and told Dumbledore that the Death Eater’s are attacking(Book 6) and (for in book 7 they will find out more about when people turn into ghosts) Dumbledore says that there are worse things than death, he’ll rather Snape kill him than risk being tortured by Voldemort. THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE IS THE HERO OF BOOK 7!

Harry Potter (i think) will train up his Occlumency, and he’ll have extreme powers by not letting Voldemort read his thoughts to know what spell he’s going to use… i think that Voldemort will destroy himself by winning the battle and using the Killing Curse (Avada Kadavra) on Harry’s scar (Harry destroys all the horcuxes except for 1, and he would rather get killed in a losing battle than hide and wait for Voldemort to come and kill him) and Voldemort falls dead when he uses the Killing Curse, because HARRY’S SCAR IS THE LAST HORCRUX! (Book 2:Dumbledore tells Harry about Voldemort sharing some of his powers when he tryed to kill Harry and only left a scar”) That explains a lot, I was reading every book for clues 10 times and found out that much, and even more, I’ll come back to this site later to tell more!

  44. oh, yea, just so you know, Harry is not going to go back in time and stop Dumbies death using a Time-Turner (i saw that on other forums) because they destroyed all of them in the ministry (Book 5). Someone says that Lupin and the OotP had a strange plan about Serius’ death… he may not be dead, maybe he’s half dead behind the veil in the MoM… Lupin was holding Harry back then, cause he would ruin the plan if he found Serius dying behind the veil, so he just let go… On other forums… they say that Harry will somehow speak with Serius in some way (by the help of Hermione’s great intelligence). Oh, yea, if you found that Harry will be healed by Fawkes, it’s none-scence because Fawkes died when Dumbledore died, you can be sure of Dumbledore dying with that (the one before last chapter indicates Fawkes singing and then dying).

    1 in Naggini (not yet destroyed) although i can’t think of a way Harry can destroy Naggini, because Voldemort controls her

    1 something of Hufflepuff

  80. I think that R.A.B stands 4 [Regulas A. Black] Sirius`s brother,remember book 5 its says sirius`s brother was a death eater an was killed because he was in 2 deep. I also believe that Remas lupin will be killed also, book 6 he was a spy for dumbledore,an also Harry,Ron and hermonie will not die in book7, Ron an hermonie will finally say they love each other because we all know they do,there just being childish.Harrys gonna kill Snape an Voldamort and the battle will take place at Hogworts because thats were Harry an Voldamort belong.

  83. ok i do like all of your theories. you all will think i’m crazy but i believe Snape is good. he was just bound by that unbreakable vow. cuz Dumbledore kinda let Snape kill him. As far as harry being the last Horcrux i’m not sure i’m 50-50 on that possibilty. but i do believe that Neville has a bigger part than we all think. If anyone can figure out that number 7 bit please let me know. Cuz J.K. Rowling was originally planning to release her book on 07/07/07 she has planned her whole series on that particular release date but now its changed and i dont know why.

Thanks for liking our theories they were awsome, we know, but Snape has to be evil, because he never stopped being a deatheater when he could have. and Snape helped Peter Pettigrew find out where James and Lily were hiding. And in the beginning of the Half Blood Prince he was talking to Malfoy’s mother and sister about why he never let Harry die in all of the other books where he or Voldemort had the perfect opportunity.

    In all the books didnt they say there was 8 years at the school and there is only 7 books so that means harry cold die or he get out of hogwarts early and become the youngest headmaster. they should make thebooks when james and lily went to hogwarts. or they should make a book of harrys son or daughter going to school.   87. bobby123, nice theory, but Professor Magonigal is the latest headmaster since Dumbledore died, and unless she dies the position of headmaster would most likely go to the next teacher in line, not to mention JK Rowling doesn’t want people to continue the books of the Harry Potter series so killing Harry would most likely be the best way for that to happen. (After all you can’t make a Harry Potter book without Harry) and it would be pretty hard to continue the series only with Ron and Hermione (who by the way can’t die) and any of Harry’s friends because unless she leaves the last book open to make an eigth book (i.e, Voldemort doesn’t die) than it would be pointless to continue the series. And if Harry does die he would be reunited with his parents.

  101. No, Dumbledore would never use a Horcrux. It is not in his nature. He knows that all living things must die in their turn. That is the natural way of life.

    Also, who says that the way to survive the Avada Kadavera curse was to know love? Lilly and James Potter both knew love, hence little Harry. But they still died.

    Harry will search and find a way to locate the remaining Horcrux’s, Voldamort will find out and go after him and they will meet up in Godric’s Hollows. Where they will both be killed as a backlash of magical energy overwhelms them as a result of a horcrux being destroyed.

  104. I do hope none of Harry’s best friends, as well as the rest of the Weasley Family, will die in The Deathly Hollows. It’s bad enough that Sirius and Dumbledore died, -huhuhu- how more if it’s Ron, Hermione, or Harry himself? What about Ron and Hermione’s blossoming love story?- I couldn’t bare the thought of it! And Harry and Ginny? But I do believe this is the where the real adventure starts. Book 7, no doubt about it, will involve the quest to find and destroy the three remaining horcruxes and then the final face-off with Voldemort’s main soul and our hero. The prospect of this adventure is really unnerving, yet all the same, fills me with the wildest excitement ever!!! Can’t wait for this last installment!!!

    Weasly Family- after Ron’s death they will move away.

    Hogwarts Teachers- all of them will close down Hogwarts for good and find new jobs.

    I think that close to the end of the book harry, ron, ginny and hermione will finally catch up to voldemort. I think a huge battle will go on and it will be the death eaters and voldemort against the order of the pheonix, harry, ron, ginny, and hermione. Harry of course will be trying to get at voldemort. In his attempt he will be killed by Voldemort, and ron (always being the underdog) who was always Harry’s best friend will be so angry and will kill voldemort.
    I also don’t think Harry is a horrcrux because in the 4th book when harry was in the graveyard with voldemort, voldemort tried to KILL HIM! If harry was voldemorts horrcrux then he wouldn’t want to be killing a part of himself.

  119. I have an idea of what one of the horcruxes are, though my theory may be a little unstable. First of all i think Harry already has found one of the horcruxes but has not realized it. It is the fake locket that he and Dumbledore found in the 6th book. I think that Regulus A. Black was put under the Imperious curse my Voldemort….so Regulus was forced to write that note sayin that he already had found the horcrux which i think is a lie. Voldemort made him write that because Voldemort wanted to cause a diversion. He didnt want anyone to find the real locket. I think he has the real locket with him or in a hiding place so filled with dark magic that only he himself could get to it. He wanted the fake unvaluable locket the horcrux making people think that the real locket was the real horcrux which would take their attention from the fake locket. Like Dumbledore said in the 6th book, “Voldemort liked to collect souvenirs for himself” so why would he want his great ancestors (Slytherin) locket be the real horcrux in case it was destroyed? He wouldnt want his great ancestors locket destroyed because it was of great value to Voldemort….it was one of his souvenirs. And that would mak the trickty diversion he wanted all along.

Harry will probably defeat Voldermort (sorry he who must not be named) by getting all the hocruxes, or whatever its called, and become head of Hogwarts. Snape and Malfoy will turn good. Hermione and Ron will finally get together, might even get married, and Harrry might get back with Ginny. So it will be a happily ever after ending.

In book 7 it has to be Voldemort or either Harry or neville because in the order of phoniex they talk about the prophecy and “one must die for other to live ” and the prophecy is talking about harry and neville so i think it is based on the prophecy. i hope J.K Rowling doesn’t not stop writing harry potter because it will be very sad to see the story end in a awful way! Dumbledore is still alive will not living but in the headmaster office you see all the pictures of the head masters and they tell harry to be quite so ofcourse dumbledore has to be there in the last book!   144. Honestly, I never once showed interest for the Harry Potter books until my friend insisted I read them. So, I decided I wanted to read all the books before I saw the Fifth movie. I then read all 6 books and half of the seventh in a month. Most reading I have ever done. I loved every single book and so far am enjoying the seventh. I do hope Harry doesn’t die and that the books are continued until Hopefully, Harry becomes just as great of a wizard as Dumbledore once was. These books are tear-jerking and suspenseful and I think that is what makes them so enjoyable. So, yes, I do hope the story continues for as long as ever. The movies don’t need to though they aren’t as near as good as the books. They leave too much interesting things out. Harry should definately defeat Lord Voldemort with his closest friends still by his side. The whole friends-would-do-anything-for-eachother thing makes the story very uplifting. Also, what kind of kid could seriously go through losing so many people so close to him…whether or not they are a character from a book. I know I couldn’t.

I woch the moives too I sortive think the 5th moive was a little disapointing I mean why did they even rate it PG-13 it’s not even scary. Did you know that the 6 moive comes out in November and the 7 moive comes out in 4 years what am I spost to do for 4 years!?
